[Jan 7, 2026] US Pre-market: Major M&A in Biotech and Semiconductor Supply Shortages

Jan 7, 2026: Eli Lilly’s $1B acquisition of Ventyx Bio, Micron’s PT raised to $400, and Uber’s AV strategy with Nvidia. Key pre-market analysis.

[Healthcare & Biotech: Eli Lilly Dominates]

Eli Lilly (LLY)

  • Acquisition News: Lilly is in final talks to acquire Ventyx Biosciences (VTYX) for $1 billion. This adds oral drugs for inflammatory diseases (Crohn’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis) and obesity-related cardiovascular pipelines to Lilly's portfolio.

  • Investment Opinion: UBS initiated coverage with a Buy rating and raised the target price to $1,250 (from $1,080). Analysts see a clear growth path for obesity drugs through 2026, especially with the potential early launch of Orforglipron.

  • AI Partnership: Expanded its oral metabolic drug partnership with Nimbus Therapeutics in a deal worth up to $1.3 billion.

Moderna (MRNA)

  • Downgrade: UBS lowered its rating to Neutral ($34 PT) due to a lack of revenue growth. While the melanoma vaccine (data due Q4 2026) is a potential 50% swing factor, the commercial opportunity is viewed as limited.

Pfizer (PFE)

  • Outlook: UBS initiated coverage with Neutral ($25 PT). Pfizer faces a massive "patent cliff" (Eliquis, Ibrance, etc.) over the next three years, potentially losing $15-20 billion in annual revenue. The current pipeline, including the Metsera acquisition, is not yet seen as sufficient to offset these losses.

[Semiconductors & Infrastructure: DRAM as a Strategic Asset]

Micron Technology (MU)

  • Major PT Hike: UBS maintained Buy and surged its target price from $300 to $400.

  • Supply Shortage: DRAM is now viewed as a "strategic asset." Micron is currently meeting only 50-75% of demand from key customers. Analysts believe the market still undervalues the demand for DRAM in AI servers and high-performance personalized devices.

Marvell Technology (MRVL)

  • Acquisition: Acquiring XConn Technologies for $540 million to secure "memory pooling" and CXL switch technology. This move strengthens Marvell's hardware for high-end AI inference, with revenue contributions expected to start in late FY27.

Amphenol (APH)

  • Market Resilience: Despite concerns that Nvidia’s "Rubin" platform might use fewer cables, Evercore ISI remains bullish (Buy, $150 PT). Data centers still require massive cabling for auxiliary systems, and Amphenol's component share in the Rubin platform could actually increase to 40%.

[Mobility & Energy: Autonomous Catalysts]

Uber Technologies (UBER)

  • Nvidia Synergy: BofA maintained Buy ($119 PT), citing Nvidia’s autonomous initiatives as a key catalyst. Nvidia’s L4 tech will accelerate Uber’s transition to a high-margin autonomous network, where Uber can either lease fleets or monetize consumer-owned AVs.

SLB (SLB) vs. Halliburton (HAL)

  • SLB: Evercore upgraded to Outperform ($54 PT), noting a successful shift toward Middle East/Offshore markets and the ChampionX acquisition.

  • HAL: Downgraded to In-line ($35 PT) due to its high exposure to the slowing North American land drilling market.

Mobileye (MBLY)

  • Humanoid Shift: Acquiring humanoid robot maker Mentee for $900 million. Analysts see this as a strategic expansion of its autonomous expertise into general robotics.

[Media & Other Notable News]

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD)

  • Hostile Bid Rejected: The board unanimously recommended shareholders reject the hostile bid from Paramount/Skydance in favor of the $72 billion merger with Netflix. The board cited unresolved flaws in Paramount's proposal despite backing from Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.

GameStop (GME)

  • CEO Ambition: Revealed a compensation plan for CEO Ryan Cohen with a target to grow GameStop’s market cap to $100 billion.

MicroStrategy (MSTR)

  • Index News: MSCI reversed its plan to exclude MSTR from its global indices. The stock rose on expectations of continued institutional demand.

■ Meta Platforms (META)

  • Acquisition Hurdle: Meta’s $2 billion acquisition of Singapore-based AI startup Manners AI is facing scrutiny from Chinese regulators. This introduces uncertainty into Meta’s expansion strategy within the rapidly growing AI sector.

  • Export Controls: Chinese authorities are reviewing whether the deal violates domestic technology export control regulations. This move highlights China's tightening oversight of cross-border AI investments.

  • Regulatory Focus: Officials from China’s Ministry of Commerce are evaluating whether transferring Manners AI’s staff and technology to Singapore before the sale to Meta constitutes a "technology export" requiring government approval. While the review is in its early stages, a requirement for an export permit could give the Chinese government significant leverage, potentially delaying or even scuttling the deal.

  • Background: Manners AI had previously moved its operations to Singapore to reduce its "China ties" and attract U.S. investment. However, Chinese officials still view the startup as a symbol of China's AI prowess and fear the sale could grant the U.S. deeper access to Chinese technology.

■ Chevron (CVX)

  • Strategic Expansion: Chevron plans to acquire Lukoil assets currently held by the private equity firm Quantum Capital, signaling further consolidation in its energy portfolio.

■ Albemarle (ALB)

  • Price Target Upgrade: Baird significantly raised its target price for Albemarle from $113 to $210, citing an optimistic outlook for a recovery in lithium prices.

■ Qualcomm (QCOM)

  • 2nm Collaboration: Qualcomm is reportedly in discussions with Samsung Electronics regarding the production of 2-nanometer (2nm) chips. This strategy aims to strengthen Qualcomm's position in the PC market with next-generation processing power.

  • Diversification: CEO Cristiano Amon confirmed negotiations with multiple foundries, including Samsung, for 2nm production. This follows TSMC’s recent commencement of 2nm mass production, a technology key for optimizing performance and power efficiency.

  • PC Market Ambitions: The move comes as Qualcomm ramps up its battle against Intel, AMD, and Apple. At CES 2026, Qualcomm expanded its lineup by unveiling the Snapdragon X2 Plus for Windows laptops. By securing advanced 2nm capacity, Qualcomm aims to reduce its reliance on the smartphone market and accelerate its PC chip shipments.
